Corey Banks

Corey joined Therium in 2022 and helps lead its business in the United States.  Before joining Therium, Corey spent more than five years as a litigation associate at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, where he worked on a broad range of commercial matters, including corporate, fiduciary duty, securities, breach of contract, antitrust/competition and bankruptcy litigation for clients in the financial services, media, technology, healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, among others.  Corey also previously clerked at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.  Before his clerkships, Corey served as a litigation associate at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP.

Corey regularly speaks on litigation funding, including as a guest lecturer at Stanford Law School, and serves on the International Legal Finance Association (ILFA) U.S. Regional Committee and the New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC) Advisory Council.  Corey received a B.A. summa cum laude from Tufts University and a J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School.  At Harvard, Corey was one of two students awarded the Sears Prize for earning the highest grades in the second-year class.

Joshua Card

Josh joined Therium in 2022 and helps lead its business in the United States.  He is an experienced litigator with nearly a decade of experience counseling clients in pre-litigation disputes and risk assessment and litigating cases and arbitration matters regarding corporate governance issues, mergers and acquisitions, founder disputes, LLC and partnership matters, and other complex commercial and securities litigation matters.  Josh also has substantial experience handling internal investigations and counseling public companies and investment firms in connection with SEC and white-collar criminal matters.

Before joining Therium, Josh was a litigator at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz and Sidley Austin LLP.  He previously clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.  Josh speaks and writes on topics related to securities, corporate governance, and commercial litigation.  He also serves on the International Legal Finance Association (ILFA) U.S. Regional Committee and the New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC) Advisory Council.

Josh received his B.A. cum laude from Amherst College and his J.D. magna cum laude from Brooklyn Law School, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Brooklyn Law Review.

Charlie Temperley

Charlie joined the Investment Team at Therium in 2022. Having completed his training contract at Womble Bond Dickinson (UK) LLP, Charlie moved to Michelmores LLP as a qualified solicitor where his practice encompassed a broad range of commercial litigation. His work has spanned complex, high value commercial contract claims; group actions; civil fraud and asset tracing; trusts and probate disputes; shareholder disputes; professional negligence; property litigation; joint venture breakdown; and multi-jurisdictional disputes and enforcement.

Charlie received a First-Class Joint Honours degree in Mathematics and Philosophy at the University of Nottingham and an MPhil in Philosophy at Darwin College, University of Cambridge where his research interest focused on counterfactual analyses before then commencing his GDL and LPC at the University of Law.

Mats Geijer

Mats is Therium Nordic’s country manager for Sweden.  He has more than 20 years of experience from shipping and insurance in Scandinavia and worldwide, having worked for firms such as Kuehne&Nagel, Navigators and Söderberg&Partners. He holds a Master of Law degree and a degree of Bachelor of Science from the University of Stockholm.

Chris Wilkins

Chris joined Therium in 2022 after nine years as a solicitor at Slaughter and May. As a senior associate in the Disputes and Investigations Group, Chris’ practice focused on resolving large-scale, complex and often multi-jurisdictional disputes for large corporates, including a number of FTSE 100 companies, across a wide range of industry sectors. Chris’ experience spans a variety of litigation in the High Court and Competition Appeal Tribunal, including substantial group actions, as well as international arbitrations, regulatory investigations and corporate criminal matters. Notable cases included acting for Standard Life Aberdeen (now abrdn) in a successful arbitration against Lloyds Banking Group and defending BHP in one of the largest group actions in English legal history. Chris also co-authored the UK chapter of the Banking Litigation Law Review 2021.

Chris obtained a First Class Honours degree in History from King’s College London and a Master’s degree with Distinction in International Relations from the London School of Economics. Chris later completed a Graduate LLB by self-study at the University of London, where he was awarded the Brigid M Cotter Prize in Laws, before completing the LPC at BPP Law School. Chris has also since qualified as a solicitor advocate.

Chief Investment Officer

Neil Purslow

Neil co-founded Therium in 2008 and is a director of Therium Capital Management Limited and the firm’s Chief Investment Officer.  Neil is a solicitor with over 23 years’ experience and was previously Litigation Counsel in-house for Marsh & MacLennan Companies, Inc. (MMC).  Prior to this he was in practice in the City of London with US firm Reed Smith and Withers.

Neil is Chair of the Executive Committee and on the management committee of ILFA, he is also a board member of the Association of Litigation Funders, the self-regulatory body for the litigation funding industry in England and Wales.  Neil has given expert evidence on litigation funding and speaks regularly at conferences and is often quoted in the media on issues related to the industry and asset class.  He gained an MA in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford (1995).  Neil Purslow was ranked as a Tier 1 individual in litigation finance by Chambers and Partners, Leaders League, Law Dragon and other directories.

Fred Bowman

Fred joined Therium in 2022 after completing an MBA at Imperial College Business School. Fred was previously an investment officer at an international litigation funder where his work focused on competition and securities litigation across a range of jurisdictions.

Fred trained and qualified as a solicitor advocate at Forsters LLP where his work included advising the beneficiary of a substantial trust with assets across multiple jurisdictions and advising a group of over 200 retail investors concerning losses suffered in a fraudulent investment scheme. Fred’s experience includes civil fraud, property, professional negligence, and shareholder disputes. He has worked on multiple group claims and has extensive experience of funded litigation acting for both corporate and individual clients.

Fred studied Ancient History and Egyptology at University College London before completing both the GDL and LPC at the University of Law. Fred most recently completed an MBA at Imperial College Business School and is studying mandarin in his spare time.

Deniz Shefki

Deniz joined Therium in September 2017 as an Investment Team Assistant. Based in the London office, she provides support to the London and international investment teams and assists with the office management. Prior to joining Therium, Deniz was an office manager with global estate agent Fine & Country. Deniz also has a foundation degree in Forensic Science.

Ben Smyth

Ben joined Therium in the Investment Team in London in 2020, following more than 15 years in Investment Banking. Ben was most recently Head of Benelux and Nordics, within the Financial Institutions Debt Capital Markets advisory group, at UBS Investment Bank.  In this role, he acted for some of the largest Banks and Insurance companies in Northern Europe, advising on liability optimisation.  Ben has experience in originating, structuring and executing a number of high profile and complex credit instruments across multiple international jurisdictions, spanning Europe, North America and Asia Pacific.

Ben achieved a First Class Degree (with Honours) in Economics from the University of Durham.  He has also completed the Graduate Diploma in Law at BPP Law School, London, where he was awarded a Distinction.  Ben’s role at Therium has involved the origination, diligence and management of single case investments but has been focused on the more structured exposures including law firm lending facilities and portfolio investments as well as investments requiring quantitative and financial analysis.

Henrik Berg

Henrik leads Therium’s business in the Nordics.  He has more than 25 years of experience as a management consultant in Scandinavia, having worked for firms including PA Consulting Group, Bain & Company and Pareto Group.  Henrik holds a MSc in economics and business administration from the Norwegian School of Economics and London School of Economics.

Together with Henrik Jensen, Henrik Berg was a pioneer of litigation funding in Norway and elsewhere in Scandinavia, successfully funding the first case in the Norwegian Courts to be backed by litigation finance.  They have originated and funded a series of litigation and arbitration cases subsequently across Scandinavia, including working on Therium’s funding of the Danske Bank litigation in Denmark.
