London, 12 April 2018. Therium Group Holdings Limited, a leading global provider of litigation finance, has added to its investment team in London with the appointment of Elly Brindle as an investment officer to Therium Capital Management.
Elly joins Therium from Boies Schiller Flexner LLP where she was a commercial litigation and international arbitration lawyer, practising competition and financial disputes, as well as white-collar fraud and corporate investigations, in particular. Previously, Elly trained and practised at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP.
Neil Purslow, Co-Founder of Therium Group Holdings, said: “Elly’s experience of working on complex cross border disputes is first class and we are delighted that she has joined Therium. We are continuing to see very strong growth for our funding services across our global platform in a broad range of litigations and arbitrations and we look forward to Elly’s ongoing contribution to the development of the business.”
Elly’s work at Boies Schiller focused on various major high stakes disputes, including representing Apple in its global antitrust litigation against Qualcomm; Midtown Acquisitions LP in its multi-jurisdictional judgment enforcement against Essar Global Fund Limited; A1 noteholders in their successful High Court litigation and settlement against the Canary Wharf Group; a major hedge fund in relation to complex High Court proceedings against Terra Firma Capital Partners’ Four Seasons Healthcare Groups; and several significant commercial and investor-state arbitrations.
In February 2018, Therium announced the completion of the first close of its new £300 million fund dedicated to litigation finance, its largest to date. The first close was at £200 million and a further £100 million is expected before final close at which point Therium will have raised nearly £600 million since its foundation in 2009. The firm has funded £26 bn of claims, globally.
Therium’s core sectors for litigation finance are: financial services, energy and mining, and technology, media and entertainment. The firm works across all forms of commercial litigation and arbitration and invests in a broad range of complex commercial disputes, from securities and shareholder actions, international arbitration, competition and anti-trust cases, through to intellectual property, insolvency and group and class actions.
Since its foundation in 2009, Therium has been at the forefront of the litigation finance industry, pioneering products such as the combined use of insurance tools alongside funding vehicles, and introducing portfolio funding into the UK. Therium has also been at the vanguard of expanding litigation funding internationally: it was the first European funder to launch a full service business in the USA, headquartered in New York, in 2016; it introduced litigation funding to Scandinavia when it opened in Oslo the same year; and the firm was the market’s first UK player to establish a full service business in Germany, in Dusseldorf in March 2017.
Therium is a founder member of the Association of Litigation Funders of England and Wales (ALF), the self-regulatory body regulating the litigation funding industry in England and Wales. Therium is supportive of the ALF and complies with its Code of Conduct.
